SPOUS Intensive Training
Friday, January 12, 2024

The SPOUS intensive phase training, conducted in two phases each spanning five days at the Abebech Gobena MCH Training Center from June 19 to July 2, aimed to introduce midlevel healthcare professionals with crucial skills for SPOUS examination. The program addressed various facets of competence, including effective communication, organizational proficiency, and collaborative teamwork in the context of OB/GYN care. The methodology of delivery encompassed dynamic elements, combining interactive lectures, guided demonstrations on ultrasound machines and real-life scenarios involving volunteers and expectant mothers, to innovative techniques like the "Teach Me Back" method and case-based teaching practices. The practical component was emphasized through role-play exercises and picture illustration utilizing bedside laptops.

Throughout the training, several challenges emerged and were adeptly addressed. These included a shortage of specific cases for hands-on practice and the trainers' dual responsibilities influencing training quality. Effective solutions were proposed, such as implementing awareness campaigns at referral health centers to ensure an adequate pool of cases for practice and careful coordination of trainer schedules. In conclusion, the SPOUS intensive phase training marked a successful endeavor, imparting vital skills and knowledge to participants while surmounting challenges through strategic solutions.
