Unfortunately, Ethiopia has a high incidence of maternal and neonatal mortality. The majority of maternal deaths in the country are caused by direct obstetric factors, particularly emergencies such as hemorrhage, pregnancy-induced hypertension, and sepsis. To address this issue, it is essential to focus on interventions that improve the timeliness of emergency obstetric care and other sexual and reproductive health services.
Structured communication and collaborative care are key principles in healthcare that can significantly improve patient outcomes and promote effective teamwork among healthcare professionals. Structured communication involves the use of standardized frameworks and processes to exchange information in a clear and organized manner, reducing the risk of errors and misunderstandings. Collaborative care emphasizes a team-based approach, recognizing that multiple perspectives and expertise contribute to better patient outcomes. By leveraging the collective expertise of the healthcare team, collaborative care enhances patient-centeredness, improves care quality, and reduces healthcare costs. Both structured communication and collaborative care are crucial in improving patient safety, care quality, and outcomes by fostering effective teamwork, information exchange, and coordination among healthcare professionals.
To support the implementation of structured communication and collaboration, ACSIS has developed the first-ever structured communication and collaborative care management training specifically designed for health service managers and liaison officers working in COPMOD implementation coach hospitals and hub health centers. These individuals play a critical role in facilitating communication within the healthcare system, serving as the interface and assuming leadership responsibilities in the exchange of care between primary care and hospital services. We aim to have significant progress at the national, regional, and institutional levels by improving communication and patient referral processes over time.
